Initial ideas

With all the background information a main challenge for the product was formed. "A product that helps the mother do sports again either directly or by saving time on other activities". With this the team came up with the following twelve ideas:

  • Gamified High Intensity Interval Training program

  • Personalized dancing system for mother and child

  • Rowing machine for mother and child

  • Bike seat for the child that has built-in entertainment

  • System that connects mothers that want to do sports

  • Personalized ergonomic chair

  • Set of cooking and cleaning toy tools for the child

  • Multifunctional clothes for sport and home

  • Organizing closet for all essentials

  • Compact training kit that can be used at work

  • Child seat for the rowing boat

  • Weekly supply of personalized food for the child

To make the co-design session more coherent, only the four most promising ideas that aligned with the mother's character and the project requirements the best were selected.

  1. Dancing system as it would allow Christine* to be physically active together with her child (she specifically does not have enough free time alone so finding time together is not a problem)

  2. Rowing machine for same reasons as previous and since the participant did rowing before having a child and is very enthusiastic about the sport

  3. Set of cooking and cleaning toys as it would save time doing household tasks and can entertain the kid while Christine does sports

  4. Organizing closet as it can potentially save a substantial amount of time and stress especially when getting ready in the morning therefore leaving space for sports

Co-design

The main goal of the second meeting with the participant was not only to find her favourite concept but to also get feedback on all four of them to further understand Christine's wishes.

Additionally three "Black Box" exercises were with different sized objects were added to see if there were challenges or even solutions she wanted that the group did not notice or come up with.

In the picture on the left you can see how the co-design session was performed. The big box, the small one higher up, and the remote control were the black box reference objects

Main findings

The favourite concept of the participant was the personalized dancing system as it would encourage her to exercise while also entertaining her child. She also suggested adding singing and musical instruments for the kid and theme the whole product in an "around the world" theme as she enjoys having a learning side to entertainment and their family is multicultural.

The full document with feedback on other concepts and results of the black box exercise as well as other results can be found in the full co-design notes that you can download here
